How To Help

Cars For Kids

  • What does Cars for Kids do with my donated vehicle?
One of two things is done with your donated vehicle. The vehicle is either auctioned or salvaged. Proceeds help children of all faiths through the services provided by Catholic Charities. Cars are not distributed to people needing a vehicle.

  • What does Cars for Kids consider a "driveable" vehicle?
Cars for Kids accepts all vehicles, regardless of mechanical condition. However, for a vehicle to be considered driveable, it must be safe for a person to drive on the highway for 50 miles. Vehicles not meeting this criteria must be towed. We will happily tow your non-driveable vehicle.

  • What information will be on my receipt?
Your receipt will merely identify you and thank you for your donation of a vehicle to Catholic Charities. Within 48 hours, we will mail you an acknowledgement of your gift that identifies you and fully describes the vehicle you have donated.

  • How much will my tax deduction be?
The Internal Revenue Service allows the donor to take a tax deduction equal to the fair market value of the vehicle up to $500 OR the amount the vehicle was auctioned for whichever is greater. Donors whose vehicles sell for more than $500 are mailed a report of the sales price approximately 6 weeks from the time of the donation. See IRS Publication 526 or consult your tax adviser for further information.

  • Can I drop my vehicle off instead of scheduling a pick-up?
Yes. Vehicles may be dropped of at the main location of Catholic Charities. Office hours are Monday - Friday, 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. Please indicate you would like to do this when telling us about your car over the phone or in the online form.
