  • Register as possible host/guest for Omaha Table Talk
Over 200 Omaha-area residents of different ethinic, racial and religious backgrounds participated in the recent event, Omaha Table Talk, a program that organizers hope will help close the city's cultural divide.

"Our goal is to build communities and relationships," said A'Jamal Byndon of Catholic Charities in Omaha, which coordinated this event. "It starts one person at a time."

The program was launched at nine homes across the city. Each host agreed to an informal dinner setting wherein guests would talk and learn about each others' experiences. A moderator and a mix of people were to be at each meeting.

Terri McFarland, chairwoman of the project, said she hopes the idea will catch on and that gatherings of Omahans who want a better understanding of another culture will multiply.

The project was modeled after one in Dallas. Catholic Charities, which has a grant from its national organization to help improve race relations in the city, proposed the table talk idea as one follow-up project after a town hall meeting on race relations a year ago. Participants in that meeting were lamenting that, despite growing up in the same area, many Omahans didn't really know residents of different cultures, race and religions.
