In violent families, children are often hurt and always affected in significant ways. Many fail to develop fully emotionally, physically and socially. There is another danger. Children who live with abuse are more likely to become abusive adults who will continue the cycle of violence. The Shelter brings mothers and their children closer through the parenting program. Children five and over develop an understanding of their situation through group discussions of such topics as abuse, separation and alcoholism. By discussing their feelings with others, the children also begin to experience an emotional release from the fears and self-doubts inflicted by family violence. Younger children benefit from The Shelter's Learning Center, a program of beneficial play and activities designed to develop skills and self-esteem. Children are a special focus and receive individual and group support during their stay at The Shelter. All children receive appropriate referrals and the support of a highly professional, caring staff.
