Half of the women and children who are homeless are homeless as the result of domestic violence. Most abused women feel isolated, guilty and ashamed. Through individual time with a domestic violence specialist, The Shelter assists women in regaining self-esteem and renewing personal values often lost as the result of degrading physical and psychological abuse. Self-esteem is the key to emotional independence. To promote this, each resident develops an individual plan for herself and her children with the guidance of her domestic violence specialist. The plan addresses practical and emotional concerns. Residents are referred to appropriate community resources for legal, medical, financial, employment and other assistance.
